As part of the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program, funded through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) and with support from the La Crete Recreation Society, Mackenzie County purchased a new $176,500.00 2022 Olympia Millennium Model E (Electric) with stainless steel chassis ice resurfacer and will receive a $50,000.00 rebate to help cover the cost.

The new electric ice resurfacer will be used in the newly constructed additional ice rink located at the Northern Lights Recreation Center in the Hamlet of La Crete.

The new Olympia is driven by four AC electric wheel motors. The cost of operating an Olympia Millennium is one-tenth the cost of a standard propane or natural gas ice resurfacer. The electric Olympia eliminated the requirement to install a natural Gas refilling station within the facility and does not emit any GHG emissions, which reduce air quality for users enjoying the services of the Northern Lights Recreation Center.

“We appreciate the support from MCCAC and the donations in support of the La Crete Recreation Society to allow for the purchase of the new electric ice resurfacer. Working together with so much support from our communities as we reduce energy costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions is very rewarding.”                            – Byron Peters, Interim CAO
